FROM VALENCIA WITH ...

... love? NO!

Sem se preselila sem ravno pravi čas. ;) Ta teden se je namreč odvijal Valencia Disseny Week (VDW) - torej cel kup zanimivih razstav* in drugih dogodkov, povezanih z oblikovanjem.

From Valencia With Design je razstava o Valencianskem oblikovanju po svetu. Razstavo so lani zasnovali in grafično oblikovali v Yonoh - studiu, kjer trenutno preživljam večji del svojih delovnih dni.

V neposrednem nadaljevanju so predstavljeni avtorji s povzetkom sodelujočih in nagrajenih del. :)

Ideja je, da bi se From Valencia with Design selila po svetu.

I moved here just in the right period. ;) Valencia Disseny Week (VDW) was at its finish line today – quite a lot of interesting exhibitions* and other design related events.

From Valencia with Design is an exhibition about Valencian design around the world. The concept and graphic design of the exhibition was created last year by Yonoh - the studio, where I currently spend most of my working days. :) The idea was to create a simple and readable way to present the work and products of various designers from Valencia and place them on the map of the world. Flags intentionally remind us of the marking for “conquered areas”. There is also a colour connection between a flag and its country’s related display point. Each presented product is also accompanied by an indication of distance between clients’ city/country and Valencia. The exhibition catalogue was designed in a small format – as a passport which leads the visitor on a journey (says the webpage).

The layout of the exhibition itself follows the main concept. As the visitor enters, he or she is immediately confronted with the situation – the map with flags. In the following, the authors are presented, alongside a summary of their represented and award-winning works. Afterwards, the exhibition itself takes the lead and invites us in. :)

The idea is that “From Valencia with Design” would change locations and travel around the world. This year’s location seems more than appropriate. The entrance hall of the Museu de Belles Arts is a circular room, which on the top is closed with a blue dome with “stars”. Paintings that surround the exhibition must date three or four hundred years ago. That time leap makes a perfect contrast with the displayed design that is contemporary, new and – above all – is not there only to be watched, but to be applied in daily life. Which makes it silently scream “here-and-now” in every aspect.

The discussion on yesterday’s exhibition opening was also held in the design spirit. Carles, my colleague/boss summed up the wise thoughts in a nice way: “I like graphic design. Because it’s fast. Obviously, a project may take time, but you see the result immediately. And if it doesn’t suit you, you can still change it. Industrial design, for instance, is a completely different story: it might take a whole year to get from sketches through models and prototypes to an actual production of the object.” I should add: what about in comparison to landscape architecture? You make a sketch of some landscaping. In autocad you define the exact location of a tree. Then you can also put it in a photo of actual situation in photoshop. Then you wait till it is planted – and even then, it’s still a tiny tree. And finally, it takes another five or ten years (or even a quarter of a century) that the tiny thing grows in something that is worth of the name tree.

Oh, yes.
But I love both, parks AND design!

*I had a chance to attend a few exhibition openings. For that matter, Slovenian and Spanish people are the same. :) Always gravitating anywhere they can get something to eat and drink for free. Here these are paella, ovviamente, and VDW official drink – beer Turia (nom nom).
